About
I am Juan Pablo Amaya
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Juan Pablo Amaya Vargas began composing music at the age of 13. By 17, he had already written a full-length opera, Cinde’ella, which was performed by the Duke Ellington School of the Arts opera workshop and orchestra.
Juan Pablo pursued Music Composition at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, with a minor in psychology. During his sophomore year, he composed his second opera, The Same Four Notes, showcased at the university's National New Voices Festival. He graduated in 2017.
After graduation, Juan Pablo worked with Arena Stage’s Voices of Now program, teaching devised theater. Throughout his career, he has taught music, acting, and performance across the globe. He has instructed drama, singing, and musical theater in Taipei, Taiwan, and music performance in Beijing, China.
A skilled musician, Juan Pablo’s primary instrument is the viola, but he is also proficient in piano, violin, Chinese erhu, guitar, and ukulele. Currently, he teaches Chinese at a public charter school in Washington, DC, where he continues to inspire students with his multifaceted talents and global teaching experience.
